Jawaharlal Nehru in his Objectives Resolution laid down the underlying principles of the Constitution:

  • Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru presented the 'Objective Resolution' on 13 December 1946 The resolution defined the objectives of the Constituent Assembly.

  • India is an Independent, Sovereign Republic.
  • India will be a union of the Indian territories which come under the authority of Britain, native princely states and areas outside the princely states which want to become part of our union.
  • India shall be a Union of erstwhile British Indian territories, Indian States, and other parts outside British India and Indian States as are willing to be a part of the Union;
  • Territories forming the Union shall be autonomous units and exercise all powers and functions of the Government and administration, except those assigned to or vested in the Union,
